The Japanese bantam is a true bantam. It is not a large fowl that has been breed to be smaller. There are several varieties of Japanese Bantams such as Black-tailed White, Black, Mottled, Black-tailed Buff and Gray.
Unique features of Japanese Bantams are they are small, low built with deep breasts and full upright tails. Their tails are carried very short, clean legs and tail carriage: A Japanese bantam's long tail is carried high and well forward, which is a disqualification in other breeds. They have an evenly serrated with four or five points comb, coarse grained, erect, and rather large on the males. The face is smooth, ear lobes medium size, red and free from all traces of white. The legs are very short, clean (free from feather), strong and sharply angled at the joints. The legs are so short as to be almost invisible and there are four toes which are straight and well spread.
The Japanese Bantam is an ideal bird to scamper on lawns and gardens, as their short legs minimize a great deal of damage to the grass.
